For Cheap Las Vegas Transportation, Ride the Deuce
The real cheapskate's preferred Las Vegas transportation is, of course, free. You hoof it. And the great thing is that much of what you want to see is going to be a pretty easy walk from your hotel, whether you're downtown or on the Strip. But not everything. So the next cheapest was of getting around Las Vegas is to take the bus. Las Vegas Transportation: The Deuced DetailsThe Las Vegas bus you want is The Deuce. It's a clean, cool, double-decker bus that plies its way up and down the Strip from Mandalay Bay on the south end all the way to Fremont Street and downtown on the north. Since the Deuce stops at nearly every hotel on the Strip, it's a great option. For Vegas cheapskates like us, the best value in Las Vegas transportation is either the $7.00 24-hour pass or the $20 3-day pass on the Deuce, depending on how long you'll be in town and how much you want to see. The pass also covers travel on the ACE line, another Las Vegas bus line, an easy transfer from the Deuce that gets you to the Las Vegas Outlet Centers or Town Center, which the Deuce doesn't cover. You purchase the passes on the bus and you must have exact change. The driver can't make change and won't take your money. He'll direct you to put it in the ticket machine. Once you've got your ticket, you can hop on and off the bus as much as you want and scan your pass into the machine each time. You can catch the Deuce at any of the bus stops near the major hotels. You'll see small blue Deuce signs stuck on poles. Always enter at the front of the bus and exit at the rear. If you're riding on the upper deck, take the front stairway up and the rear stairway back down. I think the Deuce also offers the best tour of the Strip for your first day in town. Just get on and travel down one side of the Strip and back up the other. The leisurely ride gives you a chance to see all the major hotels and resorts from a comfortable air-conditioned seat--a great way to get your bearings. Try for the front seats on the upper deck for the King's view. Las Vegas transportation as tour bus. Las Vegas Bus: One CaveatDuring peak traffic times (which is a lot of the time on the Strip) you might have a longish wait for a bus. If you're only going a block or so, it's probably faster to walk. And since traffic can make the Strip a virtual parking lot at times, bus movement is slow. If you have dinner or show reservations somewhere and want to take the Deuce, leave yourself plenty of time. Insider's Tip for Getting Around Las VegasIf you're going downtown in the evening for the Fremont Street Experience, stay on the bus all the way to the Downtown Transit Center and walk the short distance back to Fremont Street. This is so you'll know where it is. When you're ready to head back to the Strip, go back to the transit center to catch the Deuce. You'll be among the first riders to board and will have your seat before the hoards get on at Fremont Street. A lot of them will be standing all the way back to the Strip while you sit in comfort. When it comes to getting around Las Vegas, it pays to be in the know.
